I don't think you understand that, yes the Democrats are horrible, but not at all for the reasons you listed. And your opinion is still really bad when you go "Well, this guy sort of comes off as a jerk to me, so might as well vote for the guys who want to restrict women's rights, blow up everything that isn't Israel, kill poor people, and basically revert the country to the 1800's instead of voting third party or trying to vote someone else in in the primary."

Yes, all those things are exactly what all Republicans want to do.

Aside from the blowing things up, those aren't even issues somebody in the position of President is likely to face. You also have to consider that at the moment, all of the candidates are pandering specifically to conservatives. Whoever wins the nomination will certainly lighten up on their extremes once they have to win the support of the entire country.

I never said I was going to vote blindly. Once there is a candidate in place, I will reevaluate my options. I'm just saying that, at the moment, I'm most likely to pass on the incumbent.

He does have a point in that what they say to get votes is very rarely what the politician will ever actually do.

But I'm more concerned that complete wazzoos are even being considered momentarily for candidacies. This would not be a great year to point out the strengths of an informed republic considering that the candidates themselves are barely informed.

I however am the most informed. I base all of my political opinions on hexadecimal quantum code embedded in Dragonball episodes from 1988.

Well one of the reasons I'll vote GOP is because they often lie about what they'll actually do.

He has a point.

Are you trolling, or just incredibly naive?

Exactly what is your definition of a Republican politician then? Because if that isn't it, then you're not describing Republicans, you're describing something else. I feel like you're completely ignoring what Republican politicians do while they're in office for some reason. Busting unions which benefit the middle class/poor people? check. Privatizing social security, which harms the middle class and poor? check. Agitating for war with Iran? Check. Several attempts at introducing anti-abortion legislation as well as passing legislation which restricts abortions? check. Making racist comments? Check. I'm not really what your point is when this thread is filled with the horrible, horrible shit they do and say.

I feel like you're purposefully ignoring the fact that the president has an incredible amount of influence in public discourse, picks supreme court judges, picks department heads for government organizations, as well as having influence over what passes through congress. You're also ignoring that the president can veto or sign laws. So good job with that.

I have a story for you:
Quote from: Aesop
The Ass and His Purchaser
A man who wanted to buy an ass went to market, and, coming across a likely-looking beast, arranged with the owner that he should be allowed to take him home on trial to see what he was like. When he reached home he put him into his stable along with the other asses. the new comer took a look around, and immediately went and chose a place next to the laziest and greediest beasts in the stable. When the master saw this he put a halter on him at once, and led him off and handed him over to his owner again. The latter was a good deal surprised to see him back so soon, and said, "Why, do you mean to say you have tested him already?" "I don't want to put him through anymore tests," replied the other. "I could see what sort of beast he is from the companions he chose for himself."
A man is known by the company he keeps.

While it's fine that you don't want to vote for Obama, voting for a Republican is not a good thing to do and will probably harm a lot of people.

He does have a point in that what they say to get votes is very rarely what the politician will ever actually do.

Republican politicians (and Democrat politicians to a slightly lesser extant) still introduce exceedingly harmful legislation. Never mind the fact that, as president, whoever we elect will be appointing his cronies to all the various government departments as well as any supreme court seats which come up. The president also has a significant impact on public discourse, which in turn effects exactly what politicians can get away with passing. To ignore those is complete folly, and to say that SURELY none of those Republican politicians will be as bad as they are now is to take a really stupid gamble on a bunch of racist assholes for no reason. Whether they change their tune or not, the comments they've made so far are inexcusable, and to pretend that when they might change their tune later on it will make it ok is irresponsible and dangerous.

I don't really want to get into this because I don't have the inclination or intelligence to comment at length, but since you agree that they're racist, shouldn't that be enough to dissuade you? Party loyalties aside, outright racism would turn me away from any candidate, period, even if I agreed with everything else they had to offer.  There is also a comment to be made about how the Iran thing does apply because you said you would vote for any candidate that was put forth, and not just Ron Paul.

I feel all dirty for even being half serious, why don't I have any more funny pictures?

Well, for the Iran thing, I feel like with all the strategic factors going on over there right now, the US isn't too likely to go to war with Iran without some kind of violent provocation first, no matter what the person gunning for votes is saying.

As for the racist comments, for some of them it's hard to tell whether they're grandmotherly "I thought those were still things people say all the time" comments or actual "I dislike [insert minority here]" comments. Even if they are the second kind, somebody in the position of President is under so much constant scrutiny that they probably wouldn't be able to get away with making any policy decisions that could be considered racist. That isn't to say that I'm not going take such things into account, though. It just takes more than a slip-up for me to completely, 100% remove someone from consideration. There's still nearly a year left of looking at these people under magnifying glasses.

And yeah, funny pictures would be good. I didn't expect my short, summarized comment made for the purpose of giving a gist of my opinion without going into paragraphs of detail, to turn into a series of posts going into paragraphs of detail.
