Dark Heresy Thread 2: Darker Heresy
« on: August 16, 2011, 04:51:51 AM »

Your wake up, as though out of a daze. Your senses and mind sharpen, suddenly bringing the room and three figures around you into focus. The floor judders and shakes, and the small view ports in the cramped enclosure make it clear that you're aboard some sort of shuttle, but it seems too small. Trying to move your limbs, you find yourself unable to, as though they are weighed down. Suddenly, you hear a voice. It sounds like it's in your skull, but can only be coming from outside.

"Greetings, I am Inquisitor Rackham. I apologize for using my powers on you as I did, but I needed agents in the sector, and you were the only ones with the correct skills for the job and the mental patterns that would allow me to interact with you over the distances required for this operation. I would normally have sent my own men in, but they're currently in another sector on what was determined to be a wild grox chase, so I do apologize again for having to drag you into this, but it is of the utmost importance that I act, and therefore you act, upon the information I have acquired. An... associate of mine has taken something rather important to me, and you will get it back for me. Let me fill you in.

Approximately one month ago, this.... acquaintance... sent some thugs to take something very dangerous and powerful from my personal collection of artifacts. Using several leads, I tracked the item down to the rogue trader vessel The Benevolent. Unfortunately, it entered the warp as soon as my team had gotten on board and disappeared soon after. However, it has resurfaced. The crew appears to be gone, and I can only imagine my men with them as I cannot contact them, and the ship is drifting. Already the vultures circle it, waiting for their chance to pick it clean. We cannot allow this to happen until the artifact is safely back in my possession. If it is not returned to me, I will lose a considerable amount of standing with my colleagues for allowing this artifact to fall into the hands of a radical and not destroying it when I first came upon it. If we allow them to recover it before us, the power crazed maniac may actually consider using the damned thing, and Emperor alone knows what it will actually do. Further, if we can recover it, I may be able to bring charges against the foul old wretch.

Unfortunately, this associate of mine has already mobilized agents to attempt to recover the item as well. We cannot allow them to succeed. If it is recovered by them, then things will become considerably more difficult and we may not be able to stop them from using it against us, or Emperor forbid, attempting to use it against the Great Enemy themselves. If you can recover the artifact for me, I will appreciate it immensely. Not to mention that having the appreciation of an Inquisitor has benefits outside of my undying gratitude and support. Monetary benefits, to be precise. And in case you were wondering, you want my undying gratitude, because not having my undying gratitude tends to shorten your lifespan considerably.

As for your actual objectives during this operation, the first and foremost is to recover the artifact. I would imagine they were transporting it in the cargo hold, so check there. If you find it is gone, then you must find a crimson level security terminal to download the ship logs from. There is one on the bridge, one in the captain's personal quarters, and one in the main fire control battery. This may give us a lead on where it went or what happened to the ship. Third, and as a personal favor to me, I would like you to discover the fates of my men if possible. They were some of my closer comrades, so I would appreciate it. Their last known location was the captain's personal quarters. I believe they were having a rather friendly chat with the old man. Fourth, if you determine what happened to the crew leaves the wreck beyond salvaging or far too dangerous to allow it to continue to exist, you must overload the warp drives. I have given each of you a data-slate. Simply plug it into any of the crimson level security terminals and select the program you wish to use and it will execute the function, whether it is overloading the warp drives or downloading the log data. The warp drives should take close to an hour to overload, which gives you ample time to flee the doomed ship if it comes to it. Fifth, if you encounter agents from my associate, do not engage them if at all possible. A civil war is all I'd need right now. If you must engage, only engage long enough to retreat or meet one of the objectives lain out here. Finally, you are currently riding in a boarding drill shuttle, and it is a one way trip. It should deposit you close to the cargo hold. Once you complete your objectives you'll have to locate another way off of the ship, presumably one of the shuttles left in the hangar bays.

If you need to contact me, you have all had psycrystals implanted in you. Simply place your hand on your chest and think what you want to tell me and I will respond if I am able to. May the Emperor protect and good hunting."

As the voice leaves your head, you feel the weights on your limbs lift and are able to move them again. You feel what has to be your kit stowed under the seats. A light appears over the hatch which leads out, counting down from a minute thirty....

"The undying gratitude of an Inquisitor, huh," comes genuinely enthusiastically from the deep tone of the somewhat tall, dark-skinned man dressed in black fatigues as his almost alarmingly pale blue eyes look them over. "Gentlemen," he nods to the rest of the group, "The name's Jerrick." He sits down against a wall as he sorts through his various tools. As he turns away momentarily you catch a glimpse of a tattoo on his back that trails down into his clothing.

Roth rises from his cot and strikes up an Iho-stick. "Emperor damn the politics." He spits out through the stick. His stocky frame is made even larger as he puts on his uniform -complete with an absurd amount of frontal pockets- and his short, black hair disappears into a flak helmet. "However, I'm more than willing to show a few radicals His justice. Oh, and call me Roth."

Still trying to finish my character, but that is what I have so far.

A midsized man in Ecclesiarchy robes began to stir with a sigh. "I did not imagine my first mission would be so soon" he muttered to himself. The Priest turns his attention towards Roth and Jerrick. "My name is Drake and It is a Pleasure to meet you both," Drake pauses momentarialy to consider the business at hand. "I think we should probably ask the Inquisitor if he possesses the schemetics to The Benevolent."

Jerrick presses his hand to his chest and rolls his eyes. 'Hey uh. Inquisitor guy. Yeah. I hope this is actually working and I'm not the biggest idiot this side of the Void. Do we have a way to navigate the ship?'

"Well.. I think I asked him. Huh." He eyes the party, smiling, as he slides his pistol into the side holster under his clothes. "Looks like we can really pack a punch assuming you guys are as tough as you look," he jokes, "Course this guy wouldn't hire anyone who isn't. I'm from the merc company Sons of Dispater. I'd ask what you three do if your uniforms weren't so helpful."

Roth calmly slides shells into his gun. "Sons huh? Good at what they do, I can respect that. Besides a couple of radicals aren't going to be a problem." He says, still talking through the iho-stick. "Hell, we'll be in and out in a matter of minutes, Emperor willing. Drake here has a point though, see if we can get the schematics."

Drake listens to his companions as he pulls out his kit from below his seat and opens it. He takes out the flak jacket and helmet and equips them underneath his robes.  "I really haven't been training all these years for a firefight" he says while smiling the best he can manage in the situation. "I have just been in the Chantries of Tarsus most of my life, but you guys don't have to worry. This isn't my first time using my autopistol."

You hear the voice return to your minds shortly following Panther's question. "I have uploaded a third program into your data slates. Simply plug it into any terminal on the ship and it should be able to download a schematic for you. The Emperor protects." The voice again leaves.

However, a red light near the door begins flashing and a klaxon begins sounding. A metallic, artificial voice crackles out of a nearby speaker, "Thirty seconds until impact with hull. Brace for impact. Thirty seconds until impact with hull. Brace for impact." It cuts out but the klaxon continues blaring.

You faintly hear a few soft clanks and a voice say "Cybernetics online". "Sorry about the wait everyone, these implants take a while to start up." A tall, wiry young man pulls himself out of his cot, straightening his robes as the large hunk of machinery attached to his back winds itself into place. "Nice to meet you all, my name's Havelock," he says, flipping down the face shield on his flak helmet, "Just Havelock."

(forgot to post my character sheet here it is)

Music
The timer above the door counts down, reaching zero, and a solid thud shakes the entire shuttle. A shrieking of tortured metal follows, pieces of shrapnel flying past the windows. Finally, the shrieking ceases. A dull thumping echoes through the door, like the sound of distant gunfire, followed by an explosion as the door blows outward into the hole now drilled in the side of the ship, making your ears ring. The corridor beyond the door is filled with smoke, and several red smears about the size of humans dot the wall. Bullet holes have been rent into the hull, and appear to have been made by single use canisters firing into the hallway from the boarding shuttle.

Power appears to still be coursing through the ship, and the corridor is lighted, although dimly. Stale air from the ship filters into the cabin, and dust is still settling from the recent hole punched into the outer shell of the ship. Clangs, hisses, and strange noises drift in from the now silent hallway. Sparks fall onto the floor and bounce away, creating bright flashes in the dimness. A thrumming can be heard echoing through the ship, which can only be the ship's warp drives and engines. What do you do?

A puff of smoke dissipates around Roth as he sighs. "Forget what I said about 'a matter of minutes.' Whatever happened here wasn't the work of a few cowardly radicals. " He hops out of the shuttle, the thrumming immediately catching his attention. "C'mon, there should be a terminal with the clearance we need near the warp drives. Havelock, think you rig those engines to start the overload on your command? I'd rather not start that countdown just yet."

Jerrick follows behind, toting his rifle. "I didn't expect an Inquisitor to drag us here to put down some measly cowards. Look on the bright side though, brave men die quicker." He cracks a slight smile for a second, "There was gunfire though.. that means someone's fighting someone. Maybe his colleague's troupe got into a stir. Maybe it's the survivors of the crew. Could be both, could be neither." He shrugs. "It might be worth checking out. Whether we do or don't I think we should head down to the cargo hold. That's the reason we're here. If we can't handle whatever's down there then we find the logs, the crew, and a nice spot to overload the engines. I like the on-command idea though, I've got to say."

Rolled 1d100 : 37, total 37
Drake waited for the others to exit the ship first. He then looks around carefully. (Makes an Awareness test.) "We should probably get a map so we can figure our way around the ship easier." Drake said still investigating the surrounding area. "The gunfire might be a survivor from Rackham's men or some of just some of the scavengers fighting for some tech. However, we should really secure that artifact as soon as possible. We'll have plenty of time for the other objectives later."

Quote from: Results of Awareness Test.
You notice that the hallway has recently seen activity out side of your current entrance. The red smears on the wall appear to be recently living humans, or something similar to humans. Other than that, there is a door way to the left that is closed. Next to the closed door there is a terminal. To the right the hallway stretches out for about 5 meters and then bends back towards the inside of the ship.

"Well, we've got a terminal. Let's get our map." Jerrick heads over to the terminal that Drake points out and plugs in his Dataslate. He punches in the program to download a schematic of the ship before deciding if he wants to open that door.
