Pimp Your Shit / Doodlez Y'all v2.0
« on: April 21, 2012, 11:13:03 PM »
I figured I'd reopen the old Doodlez thread because I got stuff I wanna share, and I figure it's better than image bombing some other thread.  However, upon reading the old Doodlez thread (which by the way was started in two thousand and fucking eight), I figure it was just better to lock it and let it fall into obscurity.  I'm not removing it because I need some way to look back on my old shit and feel intense shame.  Oh well here we goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I'll post more as they get drawn.

Made a separate thread so I don't end up bombing Random Crap with your christmas presents.

I'll be posting these as soon as I finish them as opposed to one big batch.

As I said earlier, these are resized versions, so if you want the originals just pm me and I'll send them to you.

Okay here we go!

Spoiler for There's a cock in here.:

I'm making a car thread because cars are, let's be honest, totally fucking sweet.  This thread can be about automotive questions, opinions on that dope ass custom vinyl you've been wanting to slap on your slightly rusted POS to make it seem less terrible, or just sharing the badassery of things on wheels of the FWD, RWD, or AWD variety in the media of your choosing.  As Almighty Sports Hatchback God of the Forumz, I'll be updating this thread almost daily (yeah the things I do for you shits I swear) with news of the automotive, ball busting, octane slurping, tire slashing, torque converter, god damn MCLAREAN INHABITED world of automobiles.

THE GOD KING DEMANDED LAWS ETCHED UPON HOT FORGED ALUMINUM INTAKE MANIFOLDS
1)  Keep that prius shit outta here.  Fuck emissions.  Fuck California.  Moving on.
2)  If the post pertains to anything less than 4 cylinders that isn't on two wheels, keep it out of here and go back to that pussy ridden eco friendly hippie forum.
3)  If the post pertains to anything with 4 cylinders, it sure as shit better be turbocharged.
4)  Ricer posts will be ridiculed on the spot.  NO EXCEPTIONS.
5)  In all honesty, just go nuts guys, but try to keep it civil or I will be very upset.

LET'S BEGIN WITH SOME CLASSICS

Wow that was sexy!  But what about imports?  ENGAGE.

Whew wee!  I'm all hot and bothere- wait what do you mean you're loosing attention due to shit not MOVING?  WELL GAZE PLEBEIAN.  GAZE WELL AND DESPAIR.

Pimp Your Shit / Making a Website: Need help badly
« on: August 06, 2010, 01:49:35 PM »
So after much contemplation, I have decided to finally work on making a website.  I'm going to be using Comicpress as the webpage editor and I'll cross the domain name bridge when it comes to that.  However I'm trying to install PHP 5.2 or whatever the latest version is, and it needs a web server.  What web server program should I get and shortly after use?

P.S.  I don't know what the fuck I'm doing.

So today I go into my work study expecting a productive day of grunt work.  However, it turned out to be a slow day.  I spied a copy of the college's paper called The Technician and I proceeded to flip through it, when HORROR OF GOD DAMN HORRORS this happened.

This is the article.  My eyes started to bleed re-writing this.

Exploration of the Concept of Moe
By <name excluded for privacy reasons>
Anime Club Presidente  (that’s actually what the article says, I shit you not)

Over the last 20 years, moe (pronounced mo-eh) has become one of the staples of anime and manga.  Its increased popularity and extensive appeal have attracted fans, interested people in world cultures, affected the way stories are told around the world, and realized alternative ways to analyze stories and literature in general.  Such a broad and sweeping concept is worth exploring, and is the focus of this article.
To be frank, I absolutely hate the concept of moe.  This isn’t because of a sentimental grudge or hatred of the popular opinion, but a deep analysis of the concept and its societal implecations.  To reiterate, anime often incorporates extreme or supernatural elements to help accentuate character interations and development.  It wouldn’t make sense for Simon from “Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann” to experience the drastic changes he did without the ludicrous elements surrounding him.  Such unrealistic elements help justify abnormally fervid personalites such as Rosette in “Chrono Crusade” or Light in “Death Note.”

This leads to the first point.  Although the anime archetypes are an exaggeration of actual personalities, they, by their very nature, still appeal to fundamental ideas of what personalities are considered attractive, admirable, or realistic.  Stories wouldn’t be nearly as interesting or appealing if they excluded characters that are believable or with which the audience could identify, and anime is no exception to this type of realistic validation.

While the other abnormally strengthened moe can be found and justified in the real world, the truly innocent and cute moe is the only moe without a realistic counterpart.  This is because, outside of young children, the innocence and naivete of a real moe personality is an act used to manipulate others.  This doesn’t necessarily mean a malicious manipulation of those around the person, but a use of ‘innocent’ and ‘cute’ appeals to turn situations to their advantage.  But, as moe’s popularity and overuse increases, it becomes harder to identify or sympathize with such a fake personality and thus detracts from the impact of the story.

Second, the emotional weakness and submisivness of moe characters means they are often clingy or needy in regard to everything.  While their quirky and hesitant behavior is their primary attraction, it is always coupled with an underlying extreme emotional instability, depression, or scar that can quickly cause problems.  Irrelevant of their initial emotional state, the heavy reliance on another person for their basic emotional stability consumes an extreme amount of time and causes needless misunderstandings.  This is often abused in anime where the main love interest has to spend abundant time together with the moe character to prevent jealousy, or where the moe character assumes ridiculous things because of small behavior changes and causes unneeded trouble.

Observed on a deeper level, this means a true moe character is incapable of becoming happy without their emotional counterpart.  In a relationship, this means that any absence or death of their partner leaves a void within them that literally cannot be filled.  Not only is that premise remarkably cruel to the character, but it is exceedingly unrealistic to assume that people cannot find happiness after experiencing significant emotional trauma.  This level of instablility implies that their issues, even when muted, go far beyond that of a normal person, a normal relationship, and beyond most other moe.  While yandere (obsessiveness/psychosis driven by love) and yangire (shades of violence/insanity) are the only moe to explicitly express this level of mental disturbance, all other forms of moe show this attitude, abeit subtly, shortly before or after obtaining her emotional counterpart.  Yet, those severely broken characters are supposed to be emotionally attractive not only to someone who enjoys protecting others, but also to the majority of people.

Third, real emotional relationships don’t function in the way presented through moe characters.  By nature, the relationship of a moe character is simply one of spending time together and supporting each other in various situations.  While these are indeed qualities of a healthy relationship, real relations are far more complex and involve a wider variety of elements; elements completely ignored by moe pair.  Also, the subservient nature of the moe character means they often take on unnecessary work for others, sometimes rather forcefully as an attempt to prove how nice or considerate they are or out of a sense of social obligation.  Even if the emotional counterpart helps offset this rather wreckless personality trait, the moe character will still end up with a heavy upkeep.  This generates an endless loop of stress buildup because the couple is unable to properly manage themselves and each other.  This type of intense stess will break any real couple after a fairly short duration and, unlike how it’s depicted in anime, this type of relationship is incapable of representing a real, successful bond.

Reworded, the affection for a character is primarily based on innocence, cuteness, and a desire to protect, with reciprocation of admiration and subjugation.  However, those cute and quirky actions are the fluff of a relationship, and without a deeper bond and understanding they will fall apart.  It’s very similar to the typical high-school relationship, where the persons involved are dating each other without regard to the traits of a successful long-term relationship, actually considering each others’ personality, nor what it means to commit to someone.  While there are cases of relationships like this becoming successful, they are very rare in comparison to tother types of relationships.  To depict and assume that those types of relationships are not only natural, but also generally successful and desirable, is a severe misconception and misrepresentation of reality.

Fouth, moe’s wide range of appeal means the archetype is often used as a way to garner profit rather than add to the value of a story.  Although most moe characters are thrown in the ‘standard cast’ of a story simply because they are known to appeal to a large number of people, and thus have a higher chance of turning a larger profit.  This is often the case with visual novels, where the moe character’s path was adapted into an anime rather than another character with a deeper and meaningful plot-line for the sake of profit.  This dilutes the quality of the work and cheapens what what can otherwise be a meaningful, touching, and deep story.

This isn’t to say that moe characters necessarily destroy stories.  Indeed, there are many great works where the moe character is the primary focus and, they excel at various points of plot development, emotional turmoil, and personality development.  Moe characters can be used to great effect when trying to deliver the impact of a change, transmuting the pure and innocent character in a way  that the audience wouldn’t expect.  However, it is becoming too common for moe to be used as a quick profit device rather than used as a deep and meaningful character, which diminishes other perfectly valid and interesting moe.

Fifth, moe is an extremely sexist view of women.  The concept of moe is built around appealing to the general of an ideal or attractive woman, and thus carefully infuses many stereotypes about women to achieve this effect.  For example, moe characters are often good gooks and cleaners 9thus good housewives), quiet and submissive (so the male can be dominant), and clumsy and quirky (to make them appear ‘harmless’, ‘cute’, in need of protection, and ‘approchable’ rather than serious and independent).  The dojikko (clumsy girl) is the prime example of this, for it specifically embodies what is considered an ‘ideal woman.’  While there are other personalities used to represent women, the popularity of moe continues to block them out and make anime to appear very sexist.  This hurts the image of anime in general; the misconception spread by moe that anime is just ‘pretty girls and magic’ deter otherwise interested audiences.  Anime has always incorporated fundamental explorations into the nature of humanity and yet is constantly set aside, in part, by quick assumptions made from moe.

Currently, the anime industry is unnaturally focused on moe.  This is, in part, due to the generous profit that moe characters can generate, and partly because of the abundence of moe in Japanese culture.  However, this focus on moe is detrimental to the industry, because it denies other very valid moe and genres in general.  Even if moe is popular now, as moe becomes unpopular and without the ability to expand to new audiences, the anime industry will lose its support base and crumble.  Thus, while moe is still a very valid moe and should continue to be incorporated into anime, the anime industry needs to broaden its view to encompass other types of moe.  By increasing the variance of stories, characters, and ideas presented in anime, not only will anime appeal to a larger audience than it currently does, but it will help dispel the notion that anime is a cheap cartoon style that doesn’t merit serious academic thought and consideration.

I have never wanted to smoke myself to death this intensely before this moment.

Nonsequitur Bullshit / Attention those going to Connecticon
« on: June 20, 2009, 07:15:26 PM »
So I've had this idea for a while now, and with Spryix's help, it just might be possible, but I just want to see how everyone feels about it.

I was thinking about making personalized shirts for any Slackerz that were going to be at Connecticon.  The design would be text of your choice (preferably a forum meme) with the Slackerz logo on the sleeve and your "name" on the back.

Details are not final and I just want to get your opinions on it right now.
